The South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) is facilitating the development of the skills and knowledge base required to ensure the success of maritime economic development initiatives such as Operation Phakisa and the African Union’s African Integrated Maritime Strategy.
It is uniquely positioned to fast-track the provision of research, education and skills needed to position South Africa as a global leader in the sustainable utilisation of maritime resources, harnessing the potential for socio-economic development presented by the country’s more than 2 500km of coastline.
SAIMI is intended to serve South Africa and the African continent by promoting skills development, education, training and research that supports growth of the blue economy.
SAIMI is a multi-disciplinary, multi-stakeholder institute that is active in all aspects of the maritime sector, including shipping, fishing, harbours, manufacturing and construction, sustainability, environment, law, and marine tourism, as well as linking with marine and coastal sciences. SAIMI’s primary role is to facilitate linkages and collaboration amongst role players in maritime research, education and training in South Africa, and to work closely with similar institutes in Africa and the rest of the world. The Institute links industry and educational institutions – identifying industry needs and opportunities, and facilitating the development of education, training and research programmes that lead to career paths in the maritime industry and meet the need for technological innovation and global competitiveness.
The founding members on the steering committee of SAIMI are the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), Transnet, the Department of Higher Education and Training, the Transport SETA, and the Department of Science & Technology.
