Straton Solar is focused on one outcome – the complete eradication of your current electricity account via optimum use of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipalities feed-in Tariff scheme (FiT).
Now home-owners can benefit from installing a grid-tie rooftop solar system and exporting the generated Photo-Voltaic electricity to the grid. The generated PV energy helps the home owner to reduce and eventually eradicate all electricity bills.
In addition every kW of solar PV installed on the rooftop of your home helps to avoid annual CO2 emissions of more than 500kg.
Green and Profitable.
You will deal with long established reputable people – This ‘new’ energy is brought to you by:
- Straton Electrical – a family owned electrical company established in 1966 and with deep roots in Port Elizabeth.
- Building Automation Systems – Control your lights and appliances with one touch programmed interfaces or remotely from anywhere in the world. BA Systems have been installed in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Coega iDZ Offices, NMMU Business School, industrial giants and the homes of many prominent and green citizens.
- Mbane Contracting – is at the forefront of greenfields power development for a multi national communications company with dedicated teams at the forefront of this exciting industry.
In regions with feed-in tariff (FiT) schemes – such as Nelson Mandela Bay, a homeowner can benefit by installing a grid-tie rooftop solar system and exporting the generated PV electricity to the grid. In regions with net-metering schemes, the generated PV energy helps the home owner to reduce electricity bills.
The only ‘incentives’ are that the NMB Municipality allows full credit of any power generated and, in the case of a business, your depreciation is on a 3 year (50-30-20) basis.
In the case of a PERSONAL account your availability charge falls away when you install the bi-diretional meter as supplied by the Municipality. This may change in the future to a R50.00 per month charge.
The payback period depends on a number of scenarios and ranges from 14 months to 6.7 years.
The ideal roof is North Facing (20 degrees either side is fine) and has a pitch of 30 degrees.
We work out the projected yield using 20 years of sunshine data based on your physical address, your last 12 months electricity consumption, the angle and pitch of your roof. The expected degradation in the system is 1% per annum.
NERSA has made the suggestion to Eskom that they allow consumers with grid tie to ‘bank’ up to a year of excess power generated – no timelines on when or whether that will come into effect though.
You have 3 ‘flavours’ to choose from:
- Grid Tie with net metering (load shedding still affects you)
- Grid Tie with backup (no load shedding effects – dependant upon the number of batteries)
- Off Grid (you are on your own)
Each increasing in cost.
The ideal situation is if you have one or two tenants (e.g. granny flat/s on the same account) – then you install independent electricity meters for each, install the solar and still charge your tenants for their consumption.
We are pretty conservative and have entered the solar industry after many years of providing electrical reticulation, earthing and solar to a major telecommunications client with remote sites.
Our roots stretch back to 1966 when our late father, George, founded Straton Electrical.
Landmark projects include: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, NMMU Business School – the first in South Africa to receive official “green” design rating accreditation for a public and education building from the Green Building Council of South Africa, the SAPS 10111 Centre along with Building Automation services to many prominent PE citizens and Power Factor Correction for many large industries.
Our USP is: Harness the power of the sun
