30 October 2018 – PRETORIA – APPSolve is proud to continue its support of young local talent with its sponsorship of Paul Kamanga, a 24-year-old DRC born professional boxer, based in the south of Johannesburg. Paul is a former WBA Pan African champion in both the Welterweight and Junior Welterweight divisions, and a former WBC international champion. APPSolve’s sponsorship is key in his preparations for his next international match scheduled towards the end of 2018.
Mr Kamanga commented, “I come from a very poor family, growing up in a back room with 8 siblings and 2 parents with barely any food for us to eat daily. The only clothes we had would be the old clothes that were donated to us by other people.” He continues, “Growing up I have always loved fighting. I would fight a lot in the street and one day I was badly injured in a fight. Initially I decided to start boxing to avenge those who hit me. However, overtime, boxing changed me in that it taught me discipline and it showed me a way out of my challenging circumstances. I perceived it as a gift from God that I use this talent to better my life and the life of my family. I established my amateur boxing career here in South Africa and then went on to become a professional boxer. This has taken me to Russia and the UK where I have both trained and fought. I now have my sights set on the US and Canada.”
Paul has a clear vision for the future, “My goal now is to become No 1 in the world which will allow me make enough money to start a business that will help my family live a better life. My family and their well-being is my primary motivation to strive and be successful. They are the reason that keeps me going”. In additional to his hectic training schedule, Paul is also a motivational speaker focusing on bullying in schools. He started his own charity in 2016 called “Lets clean the South” which encourages street kids that beg at the side of the road to join the community to clean the area. In return he pays them for the day and supply them with lunch so that they do not need to beg for a day . Paul’s goal is to reach a point where it not only on a Saturday that these kids get a chance to be employed. With additional sponsorship, he wants to get these kids off the street. He hopes that a cleaner environment and better living conditions will motivate youngsters to want to improve other areas of their lives.
Paul also won the 2015 LEAD S.A. HERO for the month of September and was named top 100 most influential youth in South Africa.
Dr Kevin Lubbe, Director at APPSolve puts his own passion fox boxing into perspective, “I have always had a love for boxing. It is a sport that requires skill, discipline, strategy and athletic prowess. I have always been intrigued by the similarities between a boxer, his manager, his trainer, his sparring partners and his supporters and how easily these can be related to a business organisation and its strategy and operations. More often than not though, the boxer implements the strategy decided by the team which does not often happen in organisations. I was training at the Box Office in Rosettenville in the south of Johannesburg with Anton Gilmore who is a terrific trainer and coach. He was also a great boxer and unlucky not to have been crowned a world champion. During one of these sessions, a young scholar introduced himself to me. He had a huge smile on his face and I remember thinking how polite and respectful he was. He began to train, and he displayed all the attributes of a great fighter. He moved well, had terrific balance, had great timing and above all was disciplined and took instruction well. This young man was Paul Kamanga. I attended most of his amateur fights and when he turn pro I was there for the majority of those too. “
APPSolve sponsored Paul for his first fight in the United Kingdom. Lubbe adds, “We are once again in the privileged position to do it again for another one of his international fights. It is an honour to assist someone as disciplined and committed to his craft as Paul is. It is even better to support a sport that I love and that gives so many people an opportunity to uplift themselves”.
Maureen Grosvenor, Head of Marketing at APPSolve explains, “Our company is incredibly proud to be associated with such an awesome young man who has the world at his feet and dreams that can inspire all of us. He is the type of person that make South Africa such an exciting place to live in. Local businesses need to continue to offer real support for young people to help them realise their dreams. We wish him all the success in his road ahead.”
