South Africa, Paarl, August 2018; THE PEROLD TRIBUTUM 2014 by KWV has emerged as one of this year’s very best, having just been selected as a prestigious Perold / Absa Cape Blend wine. Significantly, the award comes during the centenary year of the company that not only helped forge the South African wine industry, but also played a defining role in the establishment of Pinotage, the proudly South African-developed grape variety.
The 8th Perold / Absa Cape Blend winners were announced on August 30 at a gala function held in Stellenbosch. Among the guests were representatives from South Africa’s leading producers, who again participated in the competition that annually identifies benchmark wines where Pinotage is the anchor component.
Pinotage is one of the varieties that enjoys pride of place among The Mentors, KWV’s range of premium wines that includes the Perold Tributum and which honour the diversity of South African terroir. These wines are hand-crafted from grapes mentored through specific site selection, that enjoy the best treatment in the vineyards, as well as extra special cellar care to deliver wines without equal. Their aim is to reflect the best South Africa has to offer.
“This wine is a good example of an experimental and innovative approach to winemaking,” says The Mentors winemaker Izele van Blerk. “We constantly challenge ourselves in our viticultural and winemaking techniques to always improve.” The Mentors cellar stands for innovation and experimentation, across winemaking techniques, wine styles and origins.
The Perold Tributum 2014 reflects this lineage of excellence, all the way back to the pioneering days of Abraham Perold – the father of Pinotage – himself.
The Perold Tributum 2014 is an elegant and distinguished Cape Blend that shows layers of dark cherries, plums and violets with hints of dark chocolate on the nose. On the palate the structure and chewy tannins can be attributed to the great balance between fruit concentration and oak integration. The finish is focused and lingers to a velvet conclusion.
The achievement of The Perold Tributum 2014 at the Perold / Absa Cape Blend competition adds to a vast collection of awards for KWV. From its earliest roots as a small co-operative of growers with the vision to improve wine industry standards and quality in South Africa, KWV has grown into a global producer. Its commitment to quality in all aspects of the business has earned KWV multiple local and international accolades, with its brands having collectively earned numerous awards in the past year alone.
