The first ever celebration of township technology and innovation wrapped up in Soweto at the end of last month amid high praise for the landmark ICT, eSports and gaming event.
“The e-Kasi Tech Fest & Gaming Expo hit the mark in a big way. It exceeded the expectations of the entrepreneurs, industry heavyweights, young people and gaming enthusiasts who all loved the fact that Soweto hosted this inaugural event,” said Mpho Tladi, i-Village Chief Operating Officer (COO) and member of the expo Organising Committee.
The i-Village Foundation and its business, ICT, education and consulting partners staged South Africa’s biggest ever gathering of policy makers, industry players, entrepreneurs and experts in township technology innovation.
Ms Stella Ndabeni Abrahams, Deputy Minister: Department of Telecommunications & Postal Services, delivered the event’s keynote address and stated her Department’s intention to continue supporting the event so that it can continue to be held annually.
Another important development to come out of the event held at Soweto’s Uncle Tom’s Hall is the Nexus e-Kasi Gaming Partnership. This is a grassroots programme that will improve e-Sports access to rural and township schools so they can participate in the growing e-Sports movement.
“The Tech fest & Gaming Expo wouldn’t have been possible without the supports of our partners, exhibitors, participants and the wider community of Soweto. All our expectations were exceeded, and we’re pleased to say this is also true of our stakeholder’s expectations. It was a roaring success and we’ll be back next year to continue to help place Soweto and townships in general at the forefront of South Africa’s ICT development,” Mr Tladi concluded.
Companies partnering with the e-Kasi Tech Festival & Gaming Expo include Ekasi Gaming, Sadico, Eagle iLab, Nexus and eKASI LEGACY Projects.
Exhibitors included Shanduka Umbrellas, ZA Domain Name Authority, Nemisa, Gauteng Department of e-Government, Technology Innovation Agency, Internet Society Gauteng Chapter and Sadico. The event’s connectivity sponsor is Borg Telecom and media partners that lent support on the three days were Soweto TV, CNBC Africa and BuaNews.
