South Africa has been using rolling blackouts also known as load shedding, to conserve electricity since the year 2008 however the current outrages have been intense, with hours ranging from two hours a day to 8 hours or more.

- Continuous recent strikes undertaken by Eskom employees without the consent of their unions result in coal plants not maintained and unable to operate.
- The state utility company is in debt to the tune of R400 Billion
- The outages are also linked to corruption, theft, and vandalism of power facilities
- Eskom has also warned that repairing power stations take a long time to clear, while the system could also have more breakdowns.
- Municipalities have outstanding debt to pay to Eskom
- Factories, shopping centers, and mines are allowed to generate their own electricity, further driving socioeconomic inequalities.
- There is a dominant collision of politics and governance which results in a lack of governance to ensure stable electricity supply and economic recovery.
