Experience a night that became a symbol of freedom, hope, and unity when this iconic concert film is screened in cinemas globally, including at Ster-Kinekor, on 23 and 27 October2024
1994 in South Africa was a watershed year. The first democratic elections took place, Nelson Mandela was sworn in as the country’s first black President, and one of the world’s late great female artists of our time performed two concerts here.
In October of that year, Whitney Houston took to the stage in Durban, making her the first major Western musician to visit the newly unified, post-apartheid nation following the ANC’s winning election. This performance was more than a concert; it was a celebration of freedom, hope, and unity.
It was just months after winning Album of The Year for The Bodyguard soundtrack. When Whitney performed her iconic hit, I Have Nothing, at Durban’s Kings Park Stadium, the crowd went wild and burst into rapturous applause.
Whitney’s powerhouse voice and emotional delivery brought joy and inspiration to a country newly liberated. Now, 30 years after her historic visit, Whitney Houston: The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban) comes to the big screen for the first time. Digitally remastered in 4K and featuring newly enhanced audio, the film captures every note, every cheer and every tear, immortalising a night that transcended music and became a beacon of change and celebration.
For two screenings only, on Wednesday 23 October at 19:30 and on Sunday 27 October at 15:00, Ster-Kinekor invites you to join thousands of fellow Whitney fans in cinemas across the world to experience the never-before-seen Durban performance, on the big screen, beautifully remastered and with enhanced audio.
“Whitney was a dream to work with; I really loved her,” says producer and director Marty Callner. “I directed her several times, but the Durban show was pure magic and the best performance I have ever witnessed. I’m so thrilled the world finally gets to experience that special, special night.”
Whitney Houston: The Concert for a new South Africa concert film will be screened at the following Ster-Kinekor cinemas: Mall of Africa and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Brooklyn in Tshwane; Gateway in Umhlanga; Baywest in Gqeberha; Garden Route in George; and Cavendish and V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.
