Before joining YES, Akido Malabela lived in Germiston, Gauteng, and was uncertain about his next steps after graduating from Tshwane University of Technology. Despite his concerns about potential unemployment, he maintained a positive outlook and stayed hopeful.
In 2022, at 25, Akido joined the YES programme, sponsored by Telkom SA and hosted by Tilt Culture, as a tourism content creator supervisor. This role marked a pivotal moment in his career, allowing him to earn through various gigs and gain invaluable experience working with major brands.
This transformative experience inspired him to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Photography, which he completed in 2023. He was honored as the Top Student in his program and received a scholarship from Tshwane University of Technology.
His milestones include earning both a National Diploma and an Advanced Diploma in Commercial Photography. Recently, he participated in the Youth4Tourism (Y4T) Art Exhibition at the Sanlam building, where four of his images were selected. He also won third prize for his photograph titled “The Tembisa Cow.”
Through the YES programme, Akido had his first experience flying and was given a significant opportunity to shoot for Mercedes-Benz, even meeting the CEO. He also played a key role in the Slow Lounge Campaign, where two of his images were displayed.
Now 27, Akido runs his own business, Malabela Photography, as a professional photographer based in Tembisa, Gauteng. The notable achievements in his business include traveling to three international airports for the Slow Lounge Campaign -starting at OR Tambo International Airport, then Cape Town International Airport, and then the Durban International Airport. This journey was not only personally rewarding but also had a substantial impact on his career. He shared this milestone with his mother, who was excited to see his progress, especially since he started his business in front of her. Meeting his uncle, David Malabela, a former photographer, and receiving his pride in Akido’s career growth further motivated him to excel.
As an introvert, Akido initially struggled with networking but has since made significant strides. Managing a business requires ongoing creativity and innovation, and Akido consistently develops fresh ideas on a monthly and yearly basis.
To overcome challenges, Akido began collaborating with more experienced individuals and found a mentor who provided guidance and boosted his confidence. Staying updated on industry trends and learning new skills has been crucial, and the modules on the YES app have been instrumental in teaching him professionalism and effective client management.
Akido is passionate about learning and views his journey as one of continuous growth. He expands his business daily by working with diverse clients and delivering high-quality, impactful photographs. His career is thriving, and he feels fulfilled.
He believes that the YES programme is about seizing opportunities with dedication and effort. The accomplishments he has achieved through YES would have taken him much longer to achieve independently. For someone from the township, proving oneself requires hard work, and YES made this process more accessible. While talent is crucial, Akido recognises that networking is essential for success, and YES has been instrumental in turning his dreams into reality.
Looking forward, Akido aspires to travel across Africa and beyond, capturing diverse sub-cultures and exploring different countries through his lens. He aims to exhibit his work internationally and plans to pursue a master’s degree while growing his business, Malabela Photography.
