Judith Jazzes Up the East Rand at Birchwood Hotel:
Queen of Afro-Jazz, Judith Sephuma, along with award winning guitarist, Kunle Ayo, will lead an evening of stellar Jazz performances on Friday, 11 May as part of the monthly Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz Evening at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
Well-known multiple platinum songstress, Judith Sephuma, has been performing for close to two decades. Her angelic, soft, sultry and melodic voice has attracted international interest from Jazz, Afro-Soul and Gospel music lovers and has collaborated with the likes of Randy Crawford, Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton, Kenny G and many more.
Nigerian guitarist, Kunle Ayo, has toured Europe, North Africa and South America, and has won numerous awards for his achievements in Jazz; including Best Male West Artist (West Africa) at the Kora Awards in 2004, Best Jazz Video at the Channel O Awards in 2005, Best Jazz Video in the Nigeria Achievement Awards in 2009 and Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 2011 Metro FM Awards.
Opening for these musical heavyweights are The Levites, an emerging local Afro-Soul group that aims to create experiences for their audience that encapsulate, preserve and nurture the different sounds of Africa.
The evening of musical talent would not be complete without humour, and comediennes Noko Moswete and Gilli Apter will be joining resident MC Hector Motivator on the Birchwood Hotel stage.
Pretoria-based Moswete, performs predominantly in Sepedi and takes inspiration from everyday experiences and current affairs. When she’s not working towards her own television show, she’s training to become a teacher.
Johannesburg born, Apter, has an reflective, interactive style of humour that has been described as somewhat feminist. Having worked in the behind-the-scenes in comedic television entertainment with Nick Rabinowitz and Nina Hastie, Apter is no stranger to the genre; however, she only began stand-up comedy with encouragement from Jason and Donovan Goliath.
