Making Lasting, Magical Memories:

Maya Angelou said that “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” and the same is true of holidays – the ones that we remember for many years to come, are the ones that made us feel something, deeply.
Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts explains, “Holidays are to be treasured and enjoyed, for they create the sacred space that’s necessary for special bonding time with your friends and family.” With holiday travel opportunities being few and far between for so many, when you finally do manage to get away, how do you ensure that your holiday will leave you with nothing but lasting, magical memories?
Shaun says that one of the factors to consider when planning for a memorable getaway is the weather, so luckily, we are blessed with insanely good rays all year round, in most parts of SA. “You’ll also want to choose a setting that sings to your soul with gorgeous views and accommodation that offers a homely atmosphere, value for money, and excellent service.” But those three tick boxes aside, what really makes for a magical, memorable time away?
Shaun offers five guidelines:
Broaden your horizons: The saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” so be sure to embrace everything your holiday destination has to offer! Break out of your comfort zone by trying something new, be it an activity that may scare you (think shark cage diving, horseback riding or ziplining) or try a type of food you’d wouldn’t usually dream of eating (think mopane worms or snails). Book to see a comedy show at the local theatre, or take part in Bingo, pool-side games or quiz nights on offer at your holiday resort.
Meet someone new: You never know who you’ll make life-long connections with; it’s all about being in the right place, at the right time. So, strike up a conversation with another family or couple, and get to know them better. Some of the greatest friendships and memories come from connections built on holiday around the pool or on a group hike…some of which can last a lifetime.
Gather memories, not mementos: Let’s face it, who really needs another fridge magnet to remind them of where they’ve travelled to? Rather spend your money on experiences not things; unique activities that you would otherwise not do in your regular, day-to-day lives. And it’s amazing what you’ll remember about those times in years to come – can’t say the same for your fridge magnets, can you?
Stop and smell the roses: Don’t race from pillar to post. Make time for lazy days in the sun, curling up with a book and swinging in hammocks. Put your phone away! Holidays don’t need to be jam-packed with every moment scheduled in the calendar – there’s nothing worse than needing a holiday from your holiday, as you’re so exhausted from so little down time.
Savour every moment: If you are on holiday, you are privileged. So, be sure to see the world through the eyes of a child – full of wonder, delight and gratitude. Take time to feast your eyes on your surroundings and soak it all in.
