Milestone Burns Dinner Set To Break Records:

Cape Town, 03 December 2018 –- The Cape Town Burns Club’s 25th annual Dinner on 9th February next year is already shaping up to break its own record as the biggest and best on the African continent and beyond.

‘Burns Night’ is a global phenomenon where Scots and their friends celebrate the life and works of Scotland’s most famous poet and writer, Robert Burns (1759-1796) and all good things Scottish.

This includes lots of tartan, whisky, haggis, bagpipes, some great speeches, song, dance and more.

The 2019 milestone Dinner at Kelvin Grove Club in Newlands will no doubt be the usual sell-out event, but this time with added impetus from generous sponsors, a show-stopping display by the Drums and Pipes of the Cape Town Highlanders and Ceòl Mhor Ceilidh (pronounced ‘kaylee’) Band.

Burns – the ‘people’s poet’ – was a humanitarian who stood for social justice and gender equality and was the creator of some of the most iconic songs, sayings and writings in the English and most other languages used worldwide today. His Auld Lang Syne is believed to be sung in more dialects on more occasions than any other on the planet.

Typically, in Cape Town there is an African twist… Event Director, Scots-born Claire Alexander, says ‘Cape Town Burns Night is a unique celebration of Robert Burns, the spirit of Scottish culture and the ever-strong fundamental links between Scotland and South Africa. Over the years, Dinner guests have evolved from a purely Scottish crowd to an event which in 2018 welcomed 15 different nationalities to Burns Night and the evening had a younger feel, with a distinctly Mother City heartbeat. It’s remarkable how one man’s words have created an immortal legacy of kindness and unity.’

Award winning radio personality, Guy McDonald of Magic 828 Am will once again host this special anniversary event.
The evening has a strong charitable ethos, raising substantial amounts spent to the last cent on humanitarian causes that include a children’s home and a shelter for terminally-ill elderly folk in the poorest of communities in Cape Town.
