SA Hockey Icons To Share Expertise With School Players:

SA Hockey’s finest past and present players, coaches and specialists will share their knowledge and experience with school-going players in the North West province as part of national development initiative by the Investec Hockey Academy at St Michaels School for Girls and in Potchefstroom on 7 and 8 September at North West University.

Leading the North West-leg of the Academy is former SA Women’s Hockey striker and Potchefstroom-local, Sulette Damons, who attained her 198th cap for the national side before her retirement.

Aimed at growing the sport and nurturing talented hockey players both provincially and nationally, the Investec Hockey Academy consists of SA Hockey icons that have played at an international level and are passionate about ensuring that local hockey remains at a competitive level.

Damons, who has a degree in Sports Science and a foundation phase teaching degree from NWU, is passionate about the benefits sport has on the development of essential life skills.

“It is so important that parents encourage their children to partake in sports like hockey. It teaches teamwork, interaction with different personalities, and that hard work and determination pay off,” says Damons.

Eager to put her years of experience on the astroturf to use, Damons and fellow professionals will spend two days with girls aged 8 to 18 working on skills, drills and a thorough knowledge of what it takes behind the scenes to reach sporting goals.
The courses we offer work on creating dynamic well-rounded athletes. Very important aspects such as mental toughness, functional ability, fitness, nutrition, recovery techniques and athlete education in general are addressed at the academy. These aspects are vital in one’s sporting development,” says Damons.

Aimed at growing the sport’s participation and skills from a grassroots level, The Investec Hockey Academy offers a Fundamental Players’ Course (ages 8 to 11) that aims to build a solid foundation for the sport, an Intermediate Players’ Course (ages 12 to 15) focusing on skills development, and an Advanced Players’ Course (ages 16 to 18), providing players with position-specific training.
