Cape Town’s most iconic road race, The Slave Route Challenge, sees its 10th year in 2020! The slave Route Challenge, powered by Brimstone, is one of the most unique races that celebrates Cape Town Heritage and historical significance. Smile 90.4FM is proud to be the official media partner for the fourth time.

The event traces the ‘slave route’ and honours those who built the Mother City. Whether you are a seasoned runner, or a novice, The Slave Route Challenge offers something for everyone. With the option of a Half Marathon, 10km Run, 10km Big Walk or a 5km fun run/walk there is something for everyone.

Starting at The City Hall, the race takes participants through District 6, Gardens, Company Gardens, Wale Street, BoKaap, Sea Point (Cape Town Stadium), Green Point (Fort Wynyard), CBD and back down Darling Street into the Castle of Good Hope with the finish line on the Grand Parade.

While the runners make their way through all the sites, there may be times where they need that extra little bit of encouragement. The Smile 90.4FM team will be on route to bring the gees and get runners motivated for the final stretch of the challenge. “It’s always such a great morning… as we cheer on the runners and bring them the best mix of the 80’s, 90’s and now! Keep a look out for our bright yellow flags!” said Marketing Manager, Kerry McIntyre.

Each year The Slave Route Challenge selects a commemorative medal and a Race Beneficiary. 2020 see’s League of the Friends of the Blind being the chosen charity. Established in 1933, as a non-profit organisation, the LOFOB is based in Grassy Park and serves the needs of blind and visually impaired children, youth, adults and their families, throughout the Western Cape and further afield. LOFOB’s specialist services are provided at no cost to clients who are mostly dependent on social grants.
