In the final week of Productivity Month 2018, the government entity tasked with promoting productivity and employment growth in South Africa has announced the winners of the National Productivity Awards 2018 at a Gala Dinner compered by Ms Redi Tlhabi at Gallagher Estate, Midrand.

During Productivity Month, October, the importance of productivity in enhancing economic growth is brought to the fore through a series of productivity workshops and seminars. The highlight of Productivity Month is the National Productivity Awards. The rationale behind Productivity Month is to showcase, share ideas, methods and perspectives on how companies can improve productivity.

The run up towards the National Productivity Awards has been marked by a series of productivity improvement workshops countrywide. The broader objectives of productivity month are:

•To promote productivity and competitiveness of the South African economy
•To raise awareness about the role of productivity in enabling economic growth
•To promote Productivity SA programmes and create awareness about the role the programmes play in enabling productivity improvement

Productivity Month initially started as a week of activities whereby efforts around creating awareness on productivity and competitiveness were intensified. Almost two decades later, the activities have developed into a fully-fledged Productivity Month that has proved to be a landmark annual campaign. The awareness campaign was introduced by the then Minister of Labour, the honourable Mr Membathisi Mdladlana.

The Chairman of the Productivity SA Board, Mr Mthunzi Mdwaba, says productivity and competitiveness are inextricably linked and are the main drivers of economic growth, income and better living standards. Mdwaba says “higher productivity is particularly important for more successful competitiveness on markets open to international competition, as it brings about a long-term improvement in the quality of life and in the creation of job”.

Chief Executive Officer of Productivity SA, Mr Mothunye Mothiba says the awards aim to galvanise South African companies into higher levels of productivity. The winners of the 2018 awards are:
