Should You Let AI Write Your CV? A South African CV Specialist Weighs In:
More job seekers are asking ChatGPT and AI-powered CV builders to write their CVs from scratch, or to punch up a CV they’ve already written. It’s fast, it’s free, and it produces something that looks presentable in minutes. But does it actually help?
Brendan Hope CV Writing, which provides professional CV writing services across South Africa, has published a practical look at where AI genuinely helps, and where it quietly gets in the way.
The upside is real: AI is a decent tool for getting past a blank page, tightening a clumsy sentence, or keeping formatting consistent across a long career history. The downside is just as real: AI has a habit of defaulting to generic phrases like “results-driven professional” that say nothing about the person behind them, and it can’t invent evidence you haven’t given it. Left unchecked, it can also introduce small factual errors during rewriting, dates, titles, figures, that only a careful human read-through will catch.
There’s also a practical risk many job seekers don’t think about: some AI-generated layouts, heavy on visual formatting, don’t parse cleanly through Applicant Tracking Systems used by South African employers and recruiters. A CV that looks great on screen but garbles on import does the applicant no favours.
“The honest answer is: use AI as a drafting tool, not a decision-maker,” says Brendan Hope. “Have it help you get words on the page, then get a careful, human eye, ideally an experienced one, over the result before it goes anywhere near an application.”
