Alan Weston Straton is the AIM Candidate Councillor for Ward 7, a member of the AIM Core Group and AIM Communications Team.

Alan’s ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; “I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
Born and bred in Gqeberha. I stand for doing the ‘right thing’ even if it costs me. I like to defend the underdog. I have always been someone who under promises and over delivers.
As a sometime member of the fourth estate I am in the privileged position of being exposed to all spheres of society – political, business, community, social, sport, arts, culture. the uniting thread amongst all has been an uneasy co-existence with our political masters and the chaos that erupts when politics comes to the fore over service to the City.
My ‘dubious’ claim to fame is being approached by two of the largest parties to stand as a Ward Councillor and turning them down, twice.
I find myself appalled at the lack of focus, demonstrated by the majority of our elected politicians, on making our City work. The emphasis at the coalface of politics seems to be on point scoring and politicking over actual service delivery and building a cohesive society the envy of the rest of South Africa.
Initially I put my hand up to stand as an independent in the ‘safe for others’ Ward 7 and then experienced an epiphany when reading that Mkhuseli Jack’s AIM for the City aligned with my own thought – almost like a NON POLITICAL political party dedicated to service and making the City work.
We need a true coming together of political leaders and civil society to help us get our pride and dignity back. Only through a true LOCAL ONLY movement can we begin to fix the City. Servant leadership is a noble calling and I feel that within my fellow AIM Members.
