This October saw Smile 90.4FM partnering with South Africa’s largest financial services group to bring The City of Cape Town the Standard Bank Business Breakfast 2017 at the Cape Town Convention Centre.
Key note speakers Anant Singh, Dion Chang and Nick Mallett kept guests captivated with their stories of inspiration and motivation – challenging attendees to ask themselves “What’s Your Next?” as well as giving them insight into what their next is.
Anant Singh, a recognised South Africa’s pre-eminent film producer, who has produced more than 80 films since 1984 spoke about his journey and challenges, during the apartheid years, which led him to film and where he is today. When asked, during the Q&A session, what was the highlight of his career, Singh mentioned that being granted the film rights to Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, The Long Walk to Freedom was an honour. Singh related how he did this by communicating through writing letters to Mandela while he was in prison.
South African trend analyst Dion Chan explained how the job world was changing with the creation of machines and robots. Chan discussed how upskilling and training within all sectors needed to be done in order to stay proactive rather than reactive. “It is vital that we identify unexpected business opportunities within shifting trends, as to ensure that global trends have relevance when translated for South African businesses” said Chan. When asked “what is your next?” Chan explained how he wanted to travel through Vietnam doing a taste tour, where he tastes all the local cuisines of each location.
Tri-Nations-winning former Springbok and Italian coach Nick Mallett; discussed the future of South African rugby, how the game of rugby has changed over the years and what potential it holds. “We, as a nation, need to be loyal supporters not only in the successful times, but also in the hard times” said Mallett.
Mallett also went on to highlight the need for South African Rugby bosses to allow for transformation to happen more organically. “There is no longer a need to put players of colour into the national or franchise teams to make up the numbers, there is now a crop of talented players like Warrick Gelant, Sbu Nkosi and Lukhanyo Am who are knocking on the Springbok-door on pure merit” said Mallett.
