What is MBE and why should schools and teachers take notice?

28 MARCH – PRETORIA – ITSI today calls upon teachers and educators to seize the opportunity to become neuromyth-busters rather than practitioners of dubious beliefs.

In preparing students for the 21st-century, teachers need to make use of best practices, and ITSI aims to bust some of the common myths surrounding learning, including how learners have their own unique learning styles, and thus how effective teaching requires teachers to take note of this in preparing their lessons.

Today, learners are encouraged to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. Learning facts prior to tests and exams in order to recite on paper is not effective, as these facts are stored in short-term memory only. Instead, students should be encouraged to do online searches to broaden their knowledge and their understanding of the subjects in question. Through 21st-century teaching methods, technology can be used efficiently, without undermining the importance of content and therefore foundational knowledge.

Further neuromyths include that we believe that the brain stops growing at a certain age, meaning that its capacity is fixed, that we only use 10% of our brains, and that we can divide people into those who are left-brained and those who are right-brained (source: http://www.oecd.org/education/ceri/neuromyths.htm). Holding fast to these beliefs will ultimately harm the education sector more than what it will do good.

ITSI will be hosting the first ever seminar in Africa on Mind-Brain-Education (MBE). The two-day seminar, with Via Afrika as the silver sponsor, is targeted at teachers and lecturers from primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions. The seminar will take place 23 – 24 May 2018 at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg, and will be in the form of a hands-on workshop facilitated by the internationally acclaimed co-authors of “Neuroteach: Brain science and the future of education”, Glenn Whitman and Dr. Ian Kelleher.

Post this workshop, educators will be able to implement MBE tools within their own teaching environments and will be able to truly enhance their learner’s ability to learn, understand and remember.
