Breaking Free from the Chains of Abuse: Peloletu’s Story:
Peloletu Maputaka, a 20-year-old, thought she had found love when she started dating her ex. However, what seemed like a loving relationship turned into a toxic nightmare that lasted for four years. The abuse she suffered during those years took a toll on her mental health, and the final blow came when her ex hacked her Facebook account and posted explicit pictures of her online. “I was 12 years old when we started dating, obviously had no idea what love is or what the logistics of being in a relationship was but it was all innocent and since he was someone I grew up knowing I was comfortable around him. During that 4 years he would make me feel insecure and make negative remarks about my body. Telling me I should go to the gym and that nobody would love me other than him because of my looks. He would force me to do things I didn’t want to do like walking a distance to get to a place just because he felt like I was lazy and had to lose weight . He would isolate me and make me stop befriending people he didn’t like or felt like I shouldn’t be friends with and that in itself was abuse. We would video call each other even when I just got out of the shower and I would answer and get dressed during the video call and that was when he took screenshots of my pictures some were pictures that he took when he was with me, when we booked a hotel. In those instances we would share a shower or I would shower in front of him . I was young and the fact that my family knew him made me comfortable around him I had no idea that one day he can do what he did , we all didn’t know because my family didn’t even know about some of the negative things he used to do” Peloletu explained.
Peloletu’s family played a vital role in her healing journey. Instead of persecuting her, they offered unwavering support and helped her delete the explicit photos and erase them from her digital footprint. Their love and understanding helped Peloletu rebuild her self-esteem and confidence. “I got calls and texts when people were asking me why did I post what I posted and I had no idea what they were talking about, and when I checked on Facebook I had seemingly posted my explicit photos. Photos that I didn’t even have on my own phone but they somehow made it to the internet, I was shocked, heartbroken and scared of what my friends might think of me, of what my family would think of me. My brothers saw parts of me that I only see when I am alone bathing and that tore my heart into pieces. I just broke down trying to make sense of what just happened, even worse I couldn’t even access my Facebook account at that time, apparently my password was changed so I couldn’t even access it and delete those pictures. I had to call my family and they tried by all means to help hack my account and delete those pictures. After that we never even discussed thatthing, I didn’t even have to explain to them how my explicit pictures ended up on the internet. I felt ashamed and sad that they had to go through that as a family because of me.
But I come from a warm, loving family who showed me love and support throughout my healing journey. They organized therapy sessions for me and I dealt with my traumatic experiences and they assured me that it was not my fault that I trusted a wrong person, they assured me that I am loved and they don’t see me any different and I will forever be grateful for them. I love them so much” said Peloletu.
